Governor Proposes to Cut Cal Grant Program

An issue that has not publicized that much, but will have a serious impact on current and future students in California is that the State is looking into cutting the whole Cal Grant program to make ends meet in the California Budget Crisis. The Governor in January proposed to the State Legislature to cut the program which gives about $100 million dollars to students of need who are lower to middle class. Leaving it up to the public institutions to make up the difference in financial aid that the Cal Grant usually comes up with.

Governor Cuts Cal Grant

If this proposal passes, it will make life difficult for many students. Many students depend on Cal Grants to pay for their college education and without it many of them would not be able to afford college. For every dollar the State invests in Higher Education they get about $3 back. Which means that the students who the State invest in will contribute to the State once they have graduated and have jobs.

As a graduate of the California State University system and a Cal Grant recipient, I know that if I had not received Cal Grant funding I would not have gone to college because I would not be able to afford it. There are plenty of students who have bright futures, but do not have the means to go to college because they can not afford it and by removing what I feel is one of the most helpful financial aid programs in the State; it will force many students to not go to college. It makes it even difficult now since the economy is looking to good right now.

I always believe that education should be an opportunity for all to experience and without the Cal Grant Program, higher education would become a privilege that only a few can afford and would be completely out of reach for students who grow up with little or no money which reduces the hope of lower class students for having an opportunity for a better life.

I urge YOU to speak to your local representatives to VOTE NO on cutting Cal Grants.

I also think that of all things the state of California should not cut, it should not cut the Cal Grant program for the reasons you have mentioned. However, I do think that the state should be actively looking to eliminate many of its programs and government bureaucracies. The state has been spending out of control for years and many of these programs should never have been created or funded in the first place. The special interests (ie farming or energy corporations) that pushed for these programs should consider it a blessing that they have been funded for as long as they have.

If California cuts its budget and reduces its spending enough, it may be in a position to cut taxes and perhaps even eliminate taxes on poor people.

Great post mike, brings an issue that I haven't heard that much about and I totally agree with you.

Speaking of budget cuts I heard a rumor they might start closing state parks to help out with the state budget. Come on california that sucks!
